Bucharest is the capital of Romania, set on the Dâmbovița River on the plain of the country's south-east.
Bucharest is first recorded in the 15th century and became the capital of Wallachia and later of Romania. Between the world wars its elegant buildings and boulevards earned it the nickname Little Paris. In the late communist era a large part of the historic centre was cleared to build the Palace of the Parliament and new avenues.
Romanian is spoken in Bucharest, the country's largest city, which draws people from every region and has a busy restaurant and cultural scene.
The Palace of the Parliament in Bucharest is one of the largest administrative buildings in the world.
