Where it is

Bovec is a small town in the upper Soča Valley in north-west Slovenia, in the Julian Alps near the border with Italy.

History

During the First World War the Soča Valley was part of the Isonzo Front, where Italian and Austro-Hungarian armies fought a long series of battles between 1915 and 1917. Kluže Fortress guarded the route through the valley from the 17th century. Today Bovec is known as one of the main outdoor sports centres in Slovenia.

People

Bovec's people speak Slovene with a local dialect, and the town mixes old farming traditions, such as sheep and cheese making, with a young community of outdoor guides.

  • The emerald Soča River
  • Rafting and kayaking
  • First World War history
  • Triglav National Park

Did you know?

The Soča River's striking emerald colour has made it a popular film location, and its valley stood in for Narnia in The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian.
