Where it is
Bengaluru, formerly Bangalore, is the capital of Karnataka, set at about 900 m on the southern Deccan plateau in the south-east of the state, a height that gives it a mild climate all year.
History
Kempe Gowda I, a Vijayanagara chieftain, founded the city with a mud fort in 1537. It later passed to the Wodeyars of Mysore and to Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan, who laid out the Lalbagh garden, and from 1809 a large British cantonment grew beside the old town. Since the 1980s the city has become a leading centre of India's information technology industry.
People
Kannada is the state language and the mother tongue of the largest group, while Tamil, Telugu, Urdu, Hindi and Malayalam are widely spoken, and English is the language of business. The Karaga festival, Dasara and the Kadlekai Parishe groundnut fair are old city traditions.
