Bel Ombre is a village in the Savanne district on the south coast of Mauritius, where beaches and resort hotels sit below the forested hills of a former sugar estate.
The village grew around a sugar estate founded in the colonial era. After sugar declined, part of the estate's land became the Frédérica nature reserve and the coast was developed for hotels and golf.
Bel Ombre is a small village whose families have long worked the sugar estate and the sea, and Mauritian Creole is the everyday language, with French and Bhojpuri also heard.
The south coast around Bel Ombre has gaps in the reef, so ocean swells break close to shore, unlike the calmer lagoons of the north and east.
