Batumi is a port city on the Black Sea coast of south-west Georgia and the capital of the autonomous republic of Adjara, close to the border with Turkey.
The area was part of ancient Colchis, and the Romans and Byzantines held the fortress at nearby Gonio. Batumi was under Ottoman rule for centuries until it passed to the Russian Empire in 1878, after which it grew as a port for Caspian oil. Since the 2000s it has been rebuilt as Georgia's main seaside resort.
Batumi's people speak Georgian, and the Adjara region has its own traditions in food, music and dance, with summer bringing visitors from across Georgia and neighbouring countries.
The Alphabetic Tower on the seafront is decorated with the 33 letters of the modern Georgian alphabet.
