About Bangkok

  • Riverside

Where it is

Bangkok is the capital of Thailand, spread across the low, flat delta of the Chao Phraya River in the country's central plain, just north of the Gulf of Thailand.

History

Bangkok began as a small trading port on the Chao Phraya during the Ayutthaya kingdom. After Ayutthaya fell in 1767, King Taksin ruled from Thonburi on the west bank, and in 1782 King Rama I, founder of the Chakri dynasty, built a new capital on the east bank around the Grand Palace. It grew through the 19th and 20th centuries into the country's political, commercial and cultural centre.

People

Bangkok's people speak Central Thai, and the city draws migrants from every province, especially the north-east (Isan), alongside a long-established Thai Chinese community centred on Yaowarat, its Chinatown. Songkran, the Thai New Year in April, and Loy Krathong fill the streets and waterways.
