About Andhra Pradesh
- Coastal
Where it is
Andhra Pradesh is a state on India's south-east coast, with a long Bay of Bengal shoreline and the fertile deltas of the Godavari and Krishna rivers, backed by the Eastern Ghats and the drier Rayalaseema uplands; its largest city is Visakhapatnam.
History
The Satavahanas ruled the region from about the 2nd century BCE, when Amaravati and Nagarjunakonda were great Buddhist centres, followed by the Eastern Chalukyas, the Kakatiyas, the Vijayanagara Empire and the Qutb Shahis of Golconda. Andhra State, formed in 1953, was the first state in independent India created on linguistic lines; it became Andhra Pradesh in 1956, and Telangana separated from it in 2014.
People
Telugu is the official language and Urdu the second, and Adivasi communities live in the forests of the Eastern Ghats. Rice farming in the river deltas, fishing along the coast and crafts such as Kalamkari and handloom weaving support many families, and Sankranti is the great harvest festival.
